Flight, Underwater
Honu Wings Wall Art | Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle Photography
At Mala Ramp, this honu banked toward me with its front flippers spread wide — and for a split second, it wasn't swimming at all. It was flying. Turtles move through water the way birds move through air, and this frame caught the exact moment that becomes obvious.
What Makes This Photo So Special?
Honu are clumsy on land and pure poetry underwater. I love this image because it shows the transformation — those powerful flippers outstretched, the turtle soaring over the reef at the old Mala Wharf like it has somewhere wonderful to be.
Wings, Not Flippers: Spread full, a honu's front flippers are unmistakably built for flight — just in a thicker sky.
A Lahaina Local: This turtle lives the good life around the Mala Wharf pilings, one of Maui's best turtle spots.
Weightless Power: You can feel the strength in those strokes — and the total ease.
Bring this underwater flight into your home — it's a sea turtle at its most majestic, soaring through blue.
